5 x Asparagus Pacific Purple Bare Root

This purple variety was bred in recently in New Zealand. Pacific Purple is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties. It is unique in the way it’s extra thick spears hold a deep purple colour in warmer weather and is very tender with a sweet flavour, distinctive from green varieties.

As Pacific Purple produces especially large-sized spears, we recommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing. This practice will produce more normal-sized diameter spears. This variety comes highly recommended from Primrose, especially if you are after something unique.

Planting Tips

Asparagus is suitable for spring planting – try to avoid the last heavy frost. Raised beds are not necessary they can be planted into borders or traditional beds. Avoid planting the asparagus on the site of old asparagus beds as this may cause problems with disease.

Choose an area that is frost pocket free and if soil is particularly heavy, then you may need to consider creating a raised bed. Ground must be kept weed free before planting and through to cultivation for best results.
